Mama’s German Chocolate Cake is a delightful, rich chocolate cake made with three layers of moist chocolate goodness, frosted with a decadent coconut and pecan frosting. It’s a family favorite and perfect for special occasions!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients: cocoa powder, flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla to the dry mixture, and mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth.
  5. Divide the batter equally among the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on wire racks.
  8. For the frosting, combine coconut and pecans in a saucepan with milk and sugar, cooking until thickened. Allow to cool before spreading between the layers and over the top of the cake.

Notes

  • For extra richness, use dark chocolate cocoa powder in the cake batter.
  • Make sure to cool the cake layers completely before frosting to avoid melting the frosting.
