- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, covered with a damp cloth.
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Divide the dough into equal portions, flatten each piece, and place cheese in the center, sealing the edges.
- In a small pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda.
- Drop each pretzel in the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on the baking sheet.
- Brush each pretzel with beaten egg.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
Notes
- For a sweeter pretzel, sprinkle with coarse salt before baking.
- Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.
